1-2-3 Sundays: Public Speaking, Sponges & Pizza
1 Theme
Public Speaking
I've never spoken in front of more than 10-20 people. My experiences so far were mainly in uni giving presentations on projects I'd worked on as part of a team.
I hadn't spoken on my own before.
This changed this week.
2 opportunities presented themselves.
- A talk to school kids on the importance of communication in the workplace and networking.
- My first training inside Project Level Up.
Naturally, I felt nervous. but I reassured myself by knowing I was talking and delivering on what I know a lot about.
Afterwards, I had the buzz to do it again having picked up different pointers for where I can improve next time around.
2 Positive Outcomes
Being A Supporter
Throughout my time competing in taekwondo in the past and running over the last year, I've been to lots of events.
The past couple of weekends I was on the sidelines, supporting instead.
- Aimee at the Glasgow 5k.
- Hyrox Glasgow for the PLU team taking part.
It was a refreshing change of pace knowing I wasn't about to go out there but be there to support them.
Going along and soaking up the atmosphere is fun and it gives back to the people who've cheered you on at many events.
Bangin' Pizzas
Yes, the new pizza place in Johnstone is open and we had to try it.
It was indeed, bangin'.
If you're looking for a Paesano-style pizza I would definitely recommend it.
You do have to book beforehand so plan ahead before you go.
3 Things I've Learned
The Sponge Mentality
When presenting to the school kids, I got asked what my top career tip was.
My answer was to be open-minded when you start working. Take in as much knowledge and information as you can.
Have no expectations other than to learn as much as possible.
Be a sponge.
The Cycle of Progression
There are four stages to this:
- Perceived limit
- Frustration
- Breakthrough
- Rapid progress
Be aware that even after rapid progress you'll find yourself back at the perceived limit stage at some point.
Where are you currently?
If you're at a limit, what is it, and why do you believe it to be true?
Can the frustrations you're experiencing be broken down to create a breakthrough?
You Are Alive
Always remember that.
Be grateful for it.
