Small Tweaks

My morning routine has been set in stone for a while.

Wake Up - Gym/Run - Work.

Simple and effective.

I usually run near the gym and get showered there however I decided to change that this week.

Setting off from the house meant I could go for a cold bath after my runs.

I'm focusing more on my recovery now due to the volume of training I'm accumulating. The cold exposure helps relax my muscles and reduces inflammation. Plus, the natural energy boost you get sets you up for a productive day.

The small 1% changes are what I'm looking to implement as I get closer to the 50 km in May. I want to be at peak physcial preparedness at the starting line knowing I did everything to maximise my training and recovery.

2 Positive Outcomes

First Event Of The Year

The first event of the year got smashed this weekend - the Glentress Half Marathon - with my good friend Ryan McNairn.

Having been scheduled to do the 10k version a year ago to the half marathon now as a training run represents what you can achieve in the space of a year.

It was a humbling course in terms of elevation - over 770m.

I'll be giving a full rundown of the event next week so check your inbox for that!

A Change In Perspective

Being at Hyrox last weekend gave me a real buzz.

The sheer number of people at the event was incredible. There's definitely a thriving fitness community in Scotland.

Previously I wasn't interested in taking part in a Hyrox event however the atmosphere, layout and format at Hyrox Glasgow have changed my mind.

It's now something I'd like to try in the future.

3 Things I've Learned

Respect The Course

Knowing you can do a half marathon on the road doesn't always crossover to the trails.

To get efficient on the road, you probably had to build up your running volume over time in small increments.

The same applies to trails.

It's going to be full of hills so training with as much elevation as possible is recommended.

It's tough but you have to respect the lay of the land rather than thinking you'll find it easy because you've run the distance before.

Realignment

We're now 7 weeks into 2023.

It's a good time to look at the goals you set at the beginning of the goal and ask yourself if what you're doing right now is working or if you need to make some adjustments.

You might have completed a goal already and want to think about the next steps but be unsure of what that is.

Journaling and talking it through with those closest to you can be helpful for you to get the thoughts out of your head and onto paper.

It's also worthwhile reviewing your routines and habits to see if they align with where you want to be.

Be An Initiator

Don't wait for someone else to dictate the outcomes.

Stand up and take the first step.
